What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the term used for configuring your website specifically so that it can be readily found on the web. The internet is basically the largest repository of information ever compiled, and it is growing on a daily basis. The information that searchers can browse on the internet is held on millions and millions of servers that have basically been networked throughout the internet. So if you think about the difficulties that can arise from trying to find a single file, or a selection of relevant files, on your own PC or MAC, then the web is several billion times more difficult. This is where the search engines come in. A searcher may not know the exact web address of the website that they wish to visit. They may know of a supplier without knowing that the supplier is involved with the product or service they seek or they may not even know of the existence of a relevant supplier. In any of these situations, the searcher will need to find some way of navigating to a suitable website.

The search engines provide this searching capability by storing the key words from each website in their gigantic databases. This is the same as you naming the files on your own PC with a list of words that relate to the document. Yes you can search your own PC for documents that contain certain terms, but this is a lengthy process. So it is much quicker to search only the names of the files. This is the same way that the search engines work. They take key phrases or words (known as keywords) and store them against the website address. Hence when you search for a certain word or term, the search engine will provide you with the list of websites that have the same keywords associated to them.
